Over the course of the festival, artists were invited to respond to the sound of the wind harp and the theme of the festival, "air". Output Arts supported many of these performances, including new works by: Bishi and Neil Kaczor, with visuals by Noriko Okaku; Ansuman Biswas, Helen Chadwick and Sam Lee; Michael Ormiston and Candida Valentino; Cando2 dance company. Output Arts also hosted an "Open Mic Night" featuring a dozen eclectic performances by emerging and established artists, all working with the VOX sound installation.

GLOW draws on the ancient traditions of the evergreen tree – celebrated in Winter as a promise of Spring – and the flickering light of candles that bring cheer to the long nights.

Reduced to their essential form, the simple geometric trees, like The Old Church itself, are rooted in heritage while celebrating the contemporary. The piece provided an intimate warming glow on cold dark nights, a symbol of hope through the winter season.

For the opening evening of the installation, Output Arts curated an evening of music and spoken word at The Old Church featuring: Sam Lee; Roshi with Pars Radio; Travis Elborough; Anina; and Gina Fergione. Output Arts are hugely grateful for their kindness and the support of The Old Church.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/static/streaming-playlists/hls/417863ac-0cde-4024-a909-18a52d042164/005d3443-7f11-476b-8b4c-84163d1e415b-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/videos/embed/95UqmWBN8y2CvjQdGwVJym</video:player_loc><video:duration>93</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>2</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-07-09T20:51:36.798Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>performance</video:tag><video:tag>installation</video:tag><video:tag>audiovisual</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.outputarts.com/c/projects/videos">Output Arts Projects</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.outputarts.com/w/5coZPYaRc13cj1HgN4qS3z</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/c204463a-55ca-47d1-85f4-939c98f4ff52.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Spring Rising</video:title><video:description>Following on from 2017’s successful Spring Waking spectacular, Spring Rising continued our exploration of change and celebrated the growth and transformation of a community through the creation of a collaborative poem and illuminated visual artworks.

Spring Waking, commissioned by Southwark Presents, was a dazzling event for East Dulwich co-produced by Output Arts and Emergency Exit Arts with support from Arts Council England.

Spring Waking featured a community light procession led by a giant illuminated butterfly and moth and a fantastic light-filled finale show with a specially composed song cycle from singer and musician Bishi.
The project included 14 workshops in primary schools across the area and 3 open community workshops making butterflies and moths for the parade, and learning carnival drumming and dancing.

Additional credits: music by Neil Kaczor and Bishi, used under license from Gryphon Records; words to Ostara My Eye by Bishi, A Light Exists in Spring by Emily Dickinson, The Sensitive Plant by Percy Bysshe Shelley; Bishi's dress by Alex Noble, hair by Mark Daniel Bailey and makeup by Evan Huang; drumming by South London Samba; event photography by Jack Pasco; event filming and video editing by brothersister.

This immersive audiovisual installation recreates the thrill and excitement of watching a storm as it moves from dark and foreboding to booming explosions of light as the gale approaches.

Commissioned for Newcastle Gateshead Initiative's Enchanted Parks 2016, Storm is Output Arts' most ambitious audiovisual installation to date: constructed from 108 separate triangular panels with a total of 4320 LEDs, 335 metres of cabling and a dozen computers. The event saw 30,000 visitors across six nights.

Storm uses a recording of a thunderstorm from the British Library Sound Archive, contributed by wildlife sound recordist Simon Elliot; Output Arts are grateful for his kind assistance.

In 2020 we presented Twinkle, a set of stars that appear to have fallen from the heavens and got stuck in the ground. The artwork reflects the difficult year that 2020 was, but brought some welcome cheer and hope to see us into 2021.

From September to November 2020, Output Arts were resident in The Old Church producing two huge lighting commissions (GLOW and Crystal Garden). We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to The Old Church and St Mary’s for their support. Twinkle was made, with our thanks to the church community, from the off-cuts and spare materials from those commissions and – as with all of our work – will go on to be shown again, repurposed and recycled.

Special thanks to Gary, who was instrumental in the making of this work.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/static/streaming-playlists/hls/e92906d1-16d5-46cd-acca-e428c05a76f1/46921be7-4221-483f-9f0a-58890df76e25-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/videos/embed/uMV28YZ8Kq2vmNPDpeqVER</video:player_loc><video:duration>119</video:duration><video:rating>5</video:rating><video:view_count>21</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-07-09T21:59:52.657Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>light</video:tag><video:tag>installation</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.outputarts.com/c/projects/videos">Output Arts Projects</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.outputarts.com/w/8R7ijhdJcEnwPkZzd8SYrS</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/7107fe72-8ffd-418b-801d-b74d8c1e7c0c.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Constellations</video:title><video:description>Constellations 2022 was commissioned by Stoke Newington Business Association and funded by Hackney Council. This included photography, video and audio recordings of the area and the people. In particular, intrigued by the unique separate bell-tower of Brookland Church, Output Arts decided to focus on the bell-ringers of Brookland.

Recorded interviews with the bell-ringers were used as the basis for an audio installation that used the patterns of the bells combined with the voices of the bell-ringers to produce a meditative piece that played within the church. This audio was played from a hanging installation that mimicked the way the bell ropes hang within the bell-tower, which is normally closed to the public. The playing of the audio was triggered by a motion sensor activated by someone walking under the installation.

This video was made to provide context for the audio installation, allowing visitors to the church to see the bell-ringers in action and consider the part they play within the church community, and how the church fits within the wider area of Romney Marsh.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/static/streaming-playlists/hls/a34781cc-fbd3-4995-8265-71e6312657c6/8e36237f-3240-44ea-9ff7-1ba1bf3274a6-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/videos/embed/maqptgrBZrD34FTsG4tKH9</video:player_loc><video:duration>595</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>2</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-07-09T20:57:12.673Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>community</video:tag><video:tag>video</video:tag><video:tag>installation</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader Course of Days</video:title><video:description>The Course of Days uses cutting-edge digital technology to explore the changing seasons and the rhythms of passing time. The piece uses gathered field recordings spanning the year and combines these with a palette of animated light and colour to reflect the dynamism of the British weather, the clamour of the animal kingdom and the pulse of rural human activity.

The title of the work comes from the words of George Harvey, a British-born American painter associated with the Hudson River School, who used paint to show what he referred to as “the course of the day” across the changing seasons. This style of rendering the luminous quality of light over a landscape later came to be known as Luminism – a word that is also now used to refer to the modern practice of creating art with digital light.

In this work, Output Arts use technology to bring these notions of the landscape into the heart of the city and remind viewers of the agricultural past on which the Corn Exchange is built.

The Course of Days is a commission by Rushbond Plc; first shown for Light Night Leeds 2018 at Leeds Corn Exchange, it can be seen there until October 2019.

Output Arts would like to thank Simon Elliott (wildlife and sound recordist), Cheryl Tipp (Curator, Wildlife and Environmental Sounds, The British Library), Steve Gardham (Yorkshire Garland Group), Roy Hardacre and Peter J Benson for the song Grand Pubs of Yorkshire, and John Greaves for the songs Sheep Gathering and Cattle Sale.

Video editing by Michelle Theimann; main theme Claude-Achille Debussy's "Clair de Lune" played by Amber Short (and a Corn Exchange security guard).</video:description><video:content_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/static/streaming-playlists/hls/a29a6e94-ca75-4d9a-a09e-7fbef0af022c/dda716b2-5894-42db-8c2b-6b7487cffe4c-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/videos/embed/m5zyCx96eWHeKjKknoFC6A</video:player_loc><video:duration>78</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>4</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-07-10T12:23:22.650Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>audiovisual</video:tag><video:tag>installation</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.outputarts.com/c/projects/videos">Output Arts Projects</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.outputarts.com/w/r6WrzC2YQpxdapAaFss49R</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://video.outputarts.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/3debd8a1-628e-4dbb-8f39-6bdfb51d3d04.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Protocol</video:title><video:description>Output Arts and 60 students from Ursuline and Seven Kings High Schools in Ilford have created Protocol, a pair of communicating machines that mix low-technology materials and traditional crafting techniques with modern digital components and computer programming to create a thoughtful and fun display of cardboard and light.

The two machines take inspiration from modern Ilford – the high street and residential tower blocks – and open a dialogue between people, between the old and the new, between arts and engineering education. The piece touches on the students' concerns about their own future, that of Ilford and of our planet – asking questions about living in London, affordability, waste and consumerism.

UCL's Integrated Legal Advice Clinic partnered with east London artists Output Arts to create a fun games-filled activity called the Department for Impossible Administration for the Great Get Together 2022. The interactive activity, which took place on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, was curated as part of a large event celebrating 10 years since the London Olympic Games. The activity sought to bring to life the vital day-to-day work of the clinic which supports east London communities to navigate the bureaucracy and access the benefits and support they are entitled to.
